4 Tips to Protect Your Windshield From Rock Chips

Rock chips on your windshield are a common problem that deserves special attention, as they may affect your visibility while you drive. That’s why we have rounded up four simple strategies to help you protect your windshield from rock chips.

Keep Your Distance

The first common-sense measure to take if you want to avoid rock chips is maintaining a reasonable distance from other cars when you drive. If you tailgate, your windshield is more exposed to rocks and other debris that the car in front of you may kick up. Additionally, keep in mind that avoiding tailgating is a good way to increase your safety while on the road.

Avoid Semis and Large Trucks

Keeping your distance is particularly important in the case of semis and large trucks. These vehicles have more wheels, so they are able to kick up more rocks than your average car. Be careful even if these vehicles have mud flaps, as they may be frayed, or may be simply ineffective.

Avoid Gravel Roads

Whenever possible, avoid gravel roads. The reason is plain to see: if a small rock on the road can chip your windshield, just imagine what can happen on a road made entirely of small rocks. If you have to take a gravel road, drive slowly and make sure to maintain a considerable distance from vehicles ahead of you, particularly semis and large trucks.

Be Swift

If you spot a rock chip on your windshield, it’s essential to be swift. Visit an expert in windshield replacement and have the glass repaired as soon as possible to prevent the chip from turning into a crack that may be costlier to repair.
