According to reports of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 14% of the police-reported traffic crashes in 2018 were caused by distracted driving. Here are five things you can do to curb distracted driving and avoid collisions.
Dressing and Personal Grooming Are Done at Home
It may sound silly, but we have all been there. You’re running out of time, and you are tempted to tie your tie or comb your hair while you drive. Don’t do this. Dressing and personal grooming are done at home, not in your car.
Don’t Multitask
More generally, avoid performing other tasks while you drive so you can focus on the road. These are some of the activities that have no place behind the wheel:
- Eating
- Reading maps
- Playing video games
- Dressing and grooming
- Looking for lost objects
- Texting
Reduce Distractions
Do everything you can to reduce distractions that may compete for your attention while you drive. Store loose objects, secure pets and children, and enlist the help of other passengers so that the environment inside the cabin stays distraction-free.
DON’T Use Your Cell Phone While You Drive
We know, this falls within the “don’t multitask” category, but it’s such a common cause of collisions and accidents that it deserves its own section. This is as straightforward as it sounds: don’t use your cell phone in any way while you drive. Don’t text, and if you need to make a call, pull over to the side of the road.
