With so many complex components in your car, it’s easy to take your windshield for granted. However, make no mistake: this is an essential part of any vehicle. That’s why today we bring you four tips to protect your windshield.
1. Change Your Windshield Wipers Regularly
While external agents such as rocks and hail are some of the most common causes of windshield damage, your windshield wipers may cause the glass to deteriorate as well. When the wiper blades wear out, the metallic core is exposed and may scratch your windshield. To avoid this, change your wipers regularly before they are completely worn down.
2. Drive Carefully
There’s a lot you can do while you drive to protect your windshield. The first rule is don’t tailgate — in addition to being dangerous, driving too close to the cars in front of you leaves your windshield exposed to all types of airborne debris (such as rocks or bottle caps) that can wreak havoc on the glass. Also, avoid loose gravel roads, and if your windshield is already cracked, steer clear or bumpy roads, as the vibrations may cause the crack to extend.
3. Park in the Shade
Extreme temperatures may damage your windshield, which is one more reason why you should park in the shade whenever possible. This has the added (and welcome) advantage of protecting your car’s paint and upholstery. Plus, when the weather gets hot, you don’t want to come back to a sweltering car!
4. Fix Chips and Cracks as Soon as Possible
You must deal swiftly with any chips or cracks in your windshield, especially when they can impair your vision. It’s possible to fix some chips and cracks yourself, so long as they are small, superficial, and localized. In most cases, however, you’ll need the help from repair experts.
