Even when you take precautions, paint can get anywhere, including on your car’s interior. Keep reading to learn how to deal with this common problem.
Removing Paint From the Upholstery of Your Car
As you know, there are two basic alternatives when it comes to upholstery: fabric and leather. The method you will use to remove paint will depend on the type of upholstery in your car.
Fabric Upholstery
If you need to clean paint on fabric upholstery, you’ll need a clean microfiber cloth, warm water, and a blunt, flat object such as a plastic scraper or palette knife.
If the paint is still fresh, use the microfiber cloth to remove the wet portion of the paint. To take care of the rest of the pigment, dip the clean part of the microfiber cloth (or a different microfiber cloth) in water and rub it against the stain until you get rid of it.
For dried paint, dip a microfiber cloth in water and blot the stain until it softens. Then use a blunt object to carefully scratch the paint residues.
Leather Upholstery
Unlike fabrics, leather has no space between fibers that paint can fill up, so cleaning paint off leather upholstery tends to be easier than fabric upholstery.
To remove paint from leather upholstery, use the same method described above for dried paint. Soften the stain with water, then blot it with a microfiber towel, and use a flat object to clean the stain. If there are any residues,
Other General Tips
For the most difficult stains or for paint splatter on your dashboard, you’ll probably have to use stronger products such as alcohol or turpentine.
In that case, remember to try the product first in a small area hidden from view. This way, you’ll find out if the product causes visible damage to the surface. If it does, then no one will be able to spot it unless they look real closer.
If you want to play it safe, you can take your car to a detailing professional: they know what products and methods to use to leave your car’s interior looking like new.
