Knowledge is power, and the same applies to your car. Learn more about car detailing with these seven common terms you will come across as you take care of your ride.
Abrasive
A material or substance is abrasive when it can scratch or clean a surface by grinding. Some abrasive products can help you restore your car’s surface to its original shine because they remove the grime accumulated on it.
Base Coat
This is the coat that gives your car its primary color and is protected by the clear coat (see below).
Brake Dust
This reddish-brown dust made up of iron particles is produced when the brake pads contact the brake rotor. The best way to keep your wheels free of brake dust is by washing your car regularly. An important piece of advice: when you wash your car, use a separate bucket and separate implements to wash the tires, as they accumulate more dirt (including brake dust) than other parts of your car.
Clay Bar
A resin compound with a texture similar to plasticine that you can rub against your car’s surface to remove contaminants such as dirt, tree sap, and splashed bugs.
Clear Coat
Pigment-free paint or resin that provides gloss and protection to the base coat (see above).
Grit Guard
A metal or plastic grill designed to trap the heaviest sediments that accumulate at the bottom of a bucket. Use a grit guard when you wash your car to ensure that those contaminants stay in the bucket and not on your car.
pH
The pH (or potential of hydrogen) scale indicates whether a product is alkaline or acidic. The lowest the number, the more acidic the substance. 0-6 is considered acidic, 7 is neutral, and 8-14 is alkaline. Ph-neutral car cleaning products are designed to be gentle with the outer layers of your car’s paint.
