The cold season is already here! That means celebrations, great food, a list of New Year’s resolutions, and a series of steps you should take to protect your car during winter.
Wax Is Essential to Protect Your Car During Winter
One of the first steps to take as you prepare your car for winter is to wax it at the beginning of the cold season. Make sure to pay special attention to the lower parts of your vehicle, (such as quarter panels, bumper, and front grille) because they are more vulnerable to dirt, salt, and other corrosive agents.
Top Off Windshield Fluid
Maintaining proper wiper fluid levels is critical to ensuring visibility, but it also helps maintain your windshield in pristine condition, as it avoids the scratches that occur when you use your windshield wipers “dry” and there is debris on the glass.
Keep Your Vehicle Clean Inside and Out
As we have emphasized in previous posts, taking care of your car means paying attention to both the inside and the outside. During winter, this means keeping the interior of your car free or crumbles or food leftovers, which combined with the heat of your vehicle, may attract insects and vermin.
Avoid Puddles
Whenever possible, avoid puddles: they may splash dirt and grime all over the body of your car. Additionally, they also tend to accumulate road salt, a corrosive agent that can inflict major damage on your car.
Beware of Salt Road
Which brings us to salt. Road salt can be very useful during winter but it can also take a heavy toll on your vehicle. In addition to waxing your car (as we saw at the beginning of this blog), these are other steps you can take to protect your car if you live in an area where road salt is used:
- Avoid driving before and after a snowstorm (you are more likely to run into road salt under those conditions).
- Don’t drive in deep snow.
- Take care of paint chips as soon as you notice them (salt may infiltrate them and corrode the body of your car).
- Keep your distance if you have to follow salt trucks and semis.
