Besides the windshield, are you able to remember the name of any other of your car’s windows? If you can’t, don’t worry: you’ll be an expert after reading this handy guide that includes all the names of your car’s windows in both the US and the UK.
A Guide to the Names of Your Car’s Windows
In case you need to repair automotive glass, or just want to be more knowledgeable about your vehicle, here’s a quick guide to the names of your car’s windows.
1. Windshield (US) / Windscreen (UK)
The windshield is the part of the car most people visualize when they think of automotive glass.
As its name implies, the front window of your car offers protection from elements such as dirt and dust, ensuring that you have perfect visibility when you drive.
But the windshield is important for another reason. Over the last decades, automotive design has become more aerodynamic. One of the consequences of this trend is that the windshield is now integral to the structure of your vehicle. That’s why you should always repair any windshield cracks or chips as soon as possible.
2. Front Vent Windows (US) / Front Door Quarters (UK)
These are the small triangular pieces of glass in the front door of your car. Not all models have front vents, and they are more common in older models. They can be fixed or set on hinges.
3. Front-Rear Door Windows / Side Car Windows
The name says it all. These are panes of automotive glass that protect the large side windows of your vehicle. They can be stationary or sliding. In some models, the rear side windows don’t go all the way down in order to protect children traveling in the rear seats of a vehicle.
4. Quarter glass (US) / Rear Door Quarter (UK)
The small window behind the rear door and above the rear wheels is known as quarter glass or rear door quarter. They can be stationary or retractable.
5. Sunroof and Moonroof
Although both terms are used interchangeably nowadays, there’s a difference between a sunroof and a moonroof, at least in theory. Originally, a sunroof was a roof panel made of the same material as the body of the car that could be removed to let sunlight and air in. A moonroof, on the other hand, was a roof panel made of glass that could be retracted or tilted. Now sunroofs made of metal are rare, so these terms have become synonyms.
6. Rear Windshield (US) / Rear Windscreen (UK)
As the name suggests, the rear windshield is the large window opposite the windshield. Just like the front windshield, the rear windshield has become a structural part of vehicles, meaning that in addition to protecting you from the elements, they also prevent the roof from collapsing in an accident.
